1 April

Saturday April 1.st At nine oC. I once more mounted

the Coach to town, & got to Bedford St. at 4 oC.

where I found two letters for me; one from Dr

Bliss, saying rooms were ready for me, ^at Magdalen Hall. whenever

I chose to come ^to Oxford; – the second from Mr Roscoe,

express.g himself satisfied with my proceedings

& wishing to have the Catalogue sent to Liverpool.

So far, good. I hastened to Henry‘s lodgings,

& was lucky enough to catch him there. He

tells me he intends leav.g the War Office – as they

will allow him to retire on a pension of 90£.

per Ann. &, in addition to this, he has #######applied for

the situation of Paymaster of the ## troops at Maidstone,

under Col. Brown, which is equal to 200 £. a year,

and he thinks he shall get it. The service will be

nothing at all – & only occasional residence.

Thus, he will, if he succeeds, be nearly an idle

man, – with an income of 290£ per Ann.; &, what

is more, – his speculations in mining####### shares

will turn out very profitably. Add to this – he

will be on the spot with Mrs ^Arnold Carter,– & I will

bet my existence,– if he plays his cards well, will

get all her large propertyx! O me miserum !

I can grant him all but the last – but that I think

I ought to share – having been the first to find out

this same relation – & have never yet been able

to go and see her,- as I proposed. I had a dreadful

headache, & went to bed very early. –

x At Mrs. C’s death, her huge fortune went to the Bankers at Maidstone, who gave ^her godson Walter Vaughan £2000!
