12 April

Wednesday 12th. In Bodln. till eleven oC. Then went to Mr James’s

Rooms, to the Lecture. There are only four gentlemen besides

myself at present in the Class, & without egotism, I am by far

the best scholar. We began the 24th book of Livy – but the

time allowed for the Lecture is only an hour, so that we

can scarcely read a single section each. This is poor work

enough. Returned to the Bodln. & Contd # the Laws. Was

introduced to the new Sub-Libn. Mr Cox, who is a very gentle-

manly man, but knows very little of books. I was too late

for dinner to-day #####in Hall, so I got none, but wandered

up to Haddington #on an empty stomach! My rooms I find

very comfortable, but there is this unpleasant ######feeling about

them. The servants expect me to enter into the same extra=

vagance with respect to breakfast parties, wine-parties, &c.

as the other young men. This I totally decline doing,

& therefore they regard me, I fancy, as one not of the

right sort. Studied Greek till 12 oC.
