Thursday. 14th. Slept at Mr Harding‘s, & at 9 oC. Bliss & his
wife, child, & servant, Harding & myself returned to town. Bliss
goes back to Oxford tomorrow. I heard from Harding, that
Mr. Edw.? Hawkins, now of Brit. Musm. had formerly entered into an
agreement with him to publish a Work on English ^coins & medals,
in the knowledge of which (& those only, if I understand
rightly,) Mr Hawkins excells. The project is now given up.
I felt very ill, #with a violent head-ache still — yet I
had made my mind up to go to Brighton tomorrow morning.
& had taken my place. I went to the Museum, & before I
left it, I gave in a Report to Mr Baber of my progress,
^in the Class Catalogue to be submitted to the Trustees of 39,500 Titles received,
the whole are arranged under General Divisions, the
greater part secondarily, & a small portion in more
minute divisions. I went with Mr ^Tidd Pratt at 3 oC.
to Fleet St., where I took two basons of barley broth at a
Cook’s shop. Unluckily, I had, de more, not brought my
Umbrella, & was obliged to walk to Half Moon St. in
the rain, which came on very suddenly. I was afraid
of the consequences, & as my head was very bad still,
immediately on my return home, I changed my things,
& laid myself on the sopha the rest of the Evening.
Henry called, & I told him of my intention to proceed
to Brighton tomorrow, shd. I feel better. I propose staying
there five days, & then go to Maidstone, to see Mrs Arnold
Carter, which I have so long neglected to do.-
