15 January

Sunday 15th. Very fine day, but excessively cold. Mr Mitchell

from Bath called on me, & brought a few lines from Lewis.

He invited me to dine with him on Thursday next at

his sister’s. Afterwards Messrs Urwin & Paynter called.

The latter offered to give me an introduction to the librarian

of Trinity Coll. Cambr. in case I go there. At 3 oC. walked

down to Fulham. The Serpentine was covered ##with skaters,

and the number of people on foot was perfectly astonishing.

Indeed to me, it was the most singular sight I have yet

witnessed in town.
