16 March

Thursday 16.th Do_____. We went over to day the whole

of the Greek poets, & many of the Historians. I find all

these MSS. ^are of the XV.th Centy. & of little value – altho’ very

splendidly written. Mr Roscoe is perfectly ignorant of

the age of MSS.  & deceives himself completely with

respect to the Homer. Received letters from Mr Petrie

#### & my brother Henry. Mr P. merely tells me Lord

Spencer had written to Mr Coke, to borrow  the copyMS of

the Saxon Laws, (No. 228.) which I knew, for Mr Coke shewed

me Lord S’s letter, & immediately,  wrote back to give

his consent. I am to take the MS. back with me.

Mr P. also informs me Dr. Noehden, Sub-Keeper of

the Coins & Marbles in the Brit. Musm. died on Tuesday

last. I fear this will be of no service to me – as it

will only introduce another into that departmt.

& I can hardly hope to be appointed to it, as my

principal application was for the MSS.
