30 January

Monday 30th. K. Charles Martyrdm. & a holiday at the Musm. Read

Sophocles all the morn~g. Walked to Hone’s & bought two Nos. of his

book. The Index will not be printed till next week. ^Paid Bohn what I owe him. At 4 oC. called

on Mr Palgrave, & met there a Mr Frere, – a great collector of coins.

Mr. P. lent me a copy of Mr Douce‘s MS. of Kyng Horn in French.

###made by Mr D. himself. It is not perfect, for at the 2393d. line

is an hiätus & probably of some extent. I shall compare it with

the fragment in the Musm. Very fortunately the commencement

& end are here, & the author is callednamed Thomas, – but whether the

same with the Rhymer, or the Thomas mentioned by R. de

Brunne, must be a subject of future inquiry. Mr Price, in his

Notes to Warton, thinks not.
