1 March

Wednesday March. 1st. Up at 5 oC. & by 6. at Fetter Lane. The

Coach started soon after, & we were fortunate in getting a day

without rain. We travelled very fast, – at full gallop the whole

way, yet we did not get to Fakenham till near nine. I never

travelled on so dreary & miserable a road in my life.

Cambridge was the only ####place that engaged my attention, but

from the narrowness of the streets I could obtain but a very im=

perfect view of it. King’s College Chapel however, & Bennet College

appeared to be very handsome buildings. The rest of the

journey from Cambridge to Brandon – was a wide waste

#######marked only by the white road ^on which we travelled, ### the straightness

& uniformity of which quite fatigued the sight. At Swaffham

it grew ##### dark, — & I was glad enough to be set down.

at the Lion. ^Inn, Fakenham. This is, however, a miserable house offor accommo-

dation. There ##was only one private ^sitting room. Which was shared by

a Mr. Hart & myself. I went to bed soon afterwards.
