Tuesday 18th. Chapel. Lecture, as usual, at eleven. This
is every day except Thursday. ####################
###########. I received today the
account of my College dues, which amount to: First or Mich.
Term (when I entered) 7.£ 15.s. 0d.;- then to Christmas, 7.£. 15.s. 1d; then to
Lady day, £.7. 12.s.1.d = 23.£. 2.s. 2.d. From this is to be deducted
5 £. the first quarter of the Exhibition allowed me by Dr. Macbride.
The remainder, 18.£ 2. 2. (having borrowed 20£. of Dr Bliss) I
immediately paid into the hands of the Principal. I learn
from him, that my not keeping my terms regularly will not
at all increase the expense, for that after the 16. terms
are paid for, I may continue to reside free of all dues
except my battels, which of course I am answerable for.
I went with Dr Bliss & Mr Rigaud, ^Savilian Prof. Germy at one oC.
to
look over a quantity of old books – which were to be #####sold per pound.
I could pick out nothing except the 3 first vols. of Rabelais,
which now completes my set. I afterwards accompanied Mr
Rigaud to Exeter College library, & examined their books & MSS.
In the latter they have nothing beyond a few of the Schoolmen,
& a #####Book of Hours which belonged to #######Elizabeth, wife of Hen. 7. and
afterwards to Catharine of Arragon, both of whose autographs
it contains.^(See p. 444) The remainder of the day I spent in the Bodln.
