Tuesday 23d. At the Musm. early & found Mr Petrie
there. He told me he had not been idle, but immediately
on the receipt of Baber‘s letter, had written to Ld Spencer,
(who is absent from town) & had received his Lordship’s
answer, in which he says, any further ^personal application at present
###would perhaps be pressing the Abp. too much, but he hoped
Mr Madden’s name would not be overlooked. It has
happened very awkwardly, & which both Baber & Petrie
have felt extremely vexed at, (altho acquitting me of any blame
or share in itthe), that Ld Spencer saw the paragraph in the
^Hampshire Telegraph, so absurdly inserted by my Father, which stated
my appointment, & in consequence of it, went personally to
thank the Abp. The consequence was, as may be supposed, a
total misunderstanding, & a few very low bows on both sides.
I am myself vexed to death about it, & anticipated some
such consequence of so ill judged a piece of folly. Probably it
may be in consequence of this, that Ld Spencer declines for
the present again troubling the Abp. & I do not wonder at it
Fortunately, however, #### the Rev.d H. J. Todd, formerly the Abp‘s Chaplain, and
still one of his confidential friends, is in town, & came to the
Musm., where Mr P. introduced him to me, & afterwards
held a long conference with him, to induce him to speak
to the abp. in my favour. Mr P. also intends to write to Dr.
D’Oyl#y. one of the present Chaplains of the Abp. on the same
account. All this is very good. Whilst at the Musm today
I collated the copy of Cnut’s Laws Harl. 746. & the variations
from Digby 13. with, that inserted in the Textus Roffensis of
which there is a careful transcript in Harl. 596. I find the
Text. Roff. agrees chiefly with ^MS Digby, & is decidedly the best
text, but sometimes has various readings differing from
both copies. Met Henry at 4 oC. & called on the Olivers and
Delaps, both in Harley St.
[At Covt. Garden in Ev’g. with Fanny N.
Slept with her at the Fountain; a charming girl.
Cost me above 5. 0. 0. £ champagne included.]
