I took home with me the first Vol. of Taylor’s Transln. of Pau=
sanias to read, ^8° 1824 I find the transln. itself is written on
so absurd a plan, that it confuses & obscures the description
completely. Occasionally also, a# false translation is given – thus
is rendered a wall, instead of a fortress, or fortified place
p. 67 et alib. &
– the pomp. p. 79. Pausanias is one of
the most valuable authors we have of the ancients, and it
is to be regretted it is not rendered more accessible to
the general reader by plates of statues, plans, &c.
