Saturday 10th. Up at ½ past 6. & at seven ^went off to Oxford.
It was a lovely day, but exceedingly warm. I arrived
at the Angel Inn by two oC. & immediately bent my steps
to the Bodln. where I was received by my friends Bandinel
& Bliss with that warmth they always have shewn towards me.
They made many enquiries respecting the ########appointment & I
learnt, that Bandinel wrote, not to Dr. D’Oyly, but, what
was far better, to the Ab~p himself, whom he knows personally,
Consider#ing the ^great interest employed in my behalf, I am
surprised I sh.d not have succeeded, & I think with Bliss, that
if Ld. Spencer had not withdrawn, in consequence of the
mistake I have before mentioned, it w.d have secured it.
It really is too provoking! I looked over Fa#####bricius, the new
4.to Edit’n by Harles, which I find far superior to the old
one. I then waited on the Principal ^Dr. Macbride. who was remarkably
civil to me, & by his leave I took possession of the Rooms of Mr
Pose, adjoinging those I formerly had, but infinitely superior
in point of furniture; in# fact, remarkably comfortable.
I find but very few men in College, most of them havging
left. I had a violent head-ache, & was glad to get some
sleep. Bliss apologised for not asking me to dinner, on
account of having his house full, viz… his mother, sister,
cousin, & her lover Col. —. I was, however, glad to escape it,
as I felt too unwell to have talked.
