Tuesday 11^th. At Mus^m. from 9 till 4. Received a letter

from D^r Bliss, in which he tells me, that immediately

on hearing the death of poor Combe, he wrote a strong letter

in my favor to Vaux, the Ab’ps Chaplain, & ####^{he advises} me

to apply myself #######^again to the Ab’p for the vacancy. On

consulting with Baber & Petrie who happened to come

to the Mus^m.) they both advised me to remain quiet, as it

might only weaken my interest. There are two Candi_^^dates.

Hawkins, who succeeded Noehden, & Smedley (brother

to the Editor of Encycl. Metrop.) who was appointed by the

Trustees to continue Noehden‘s Medallis work. Of these two

Smedley is thought to have the fairer chance, on account of his

scholarship. But in case Hawkins were promoted, it is said

Smedley would not accept the ####^{inferior post.} If so, I may

then apply # myself, and certainly shall. Mr Petrie told

me he was going to York again immediately. All he wishes

completed at present are the letters of Alcuin. He also begged

that in future whatever time I might devote to his service,

I should consider it at the same rate, as if working for

the Trustees. On a calculation, this would be as follows:

360£ per ann. for attendance during 44 weeks, 6 days

per week, & 6 hours per diem.

44×6 = 264^days x 6 = 1584^hrs.

264/360^£/ 1^£.7.3¼ per diem x 6 = 8^£.3.7½ per week x 6 = 359^£.19^s.6^d
