Saturday 13th. At eleven oC. went to Corpus ^College & called on Mr.
Gresswell, the Junior Dean, who introduced me to two of the other
Fellows, & we proceeded to the MS. library. My object was to examine
a Codex. (F.1.7.) containing several inedited letters of St. Bernard,
of which I was to transcribe #three & collate five others: two##
in the Histor. Novell. of Malmesbury, onetwo in Eadmer, & three in
S. Bernard’s works. The MS. is a fine one of 13th Centy. & I
collated the letter in Eadmer, & transcribed the longest (no. 2d).
The rest I was obliged to leave unfinished till another time
on account of the Hist. Novell. being taken out of their library.
It was agreed I shd call again on them next week, &, if I liked,
take the MS. to the Bodln. by first signing########## a bond to restore it.
The remainder of the day (after lectures on Logic & Herodot.) I
was at the Liby. & collected several books of reference, to
enable me to go on with the Holkham Catalogue & which are absolutely
indispensable in a work of this nature. They are: Fabricii
Bibl. Græc.; ^Vinc. Placii Theatrum, two vols. fol.; Lambecii Bibl.
Cæs. Vind.; Bandini Bibl. Laur.;+ Saxii Onimasticon; Cave’s
Bibl. Eccles. & the writings of Leo Allatius. The remainder of
the works I shall have occasion to consult, viz. the Bibliotheca
Pa##trum. & the Voluminous works of the Fathers are just around
me, so that by walk’g a few yards, I have every book I
can name within my reach! This is admirable, & indeed
the Bodln. liby is the only place in the world, where this
#####can be done with such facility. This is the last day of
Term. The next term (Act Term) commences, on the 17th.
Mem.## Mr Gaisford, the Greek Profr. came to the Lib’y today, and
invited me to dine with him, which I consider a very great
honor & compliment, for his mansion is considered by all,
even
by the principal men in Oxford, an “arcta domus”.
