Sunday 14.th Attended Chapel in the morn~g, & being Whit
Sunday, the Sacrament ## was administed, in which I
(invitus, fateor) partook: & which cost me half a crown.
It was a most lovely day, but I spent the greater part
of it in my room, complet’g the Index to the Holkham
Catal. At 5 oC. went to Mr Gaisford‘s in Holywell, and
found besides myself, only one guest invited, viz. Mr
Surtees the Durham Historian, formerly of Christ Ch.
& a fellow Collegn. of Mr G‘s. The ev’g passed very pleasantly
& Mr G. was particularly civil & attentive to me.
Surtees is a great chatterer, & nearly got into a scrape,
for he began speaking of the new B’p. of Durham, Dr Van
Mildert, in very free terms: not knowing or ^not recollectg,
that Gaisford had married the Bp’s niece. Gaisford
however very prudently avoided the shock, by saying
he knew nothing of the B’p.
