16 February

Thursday. 16th. At Musm. Finished Domit. A. 8. Mr Petrie was there

& we collated my transcript of Gurney‘s MS. with two other copies in

the Musm., one, a very fine one, about 1200. Bibl. Reg. 11. B. II;

the beginning of the

the other, a late transcript of ^the beginning of the 14 centy Cott. Claud. D. 2. The

preface & Argumentum are omitted in both, — & the Cotton copy differs

very considerably from the other two, which nearly agree. We are therefore

to go over it separately. I am to copy from Bibl. Reg. 11. B. II. the

portion required to connect Domit. A. 8. & MS^ Gurney, so that

the First book or portion of the work will then be complete. No more

of it is known to exist, except in the unique MS. of Mr Coke, of

which I shall speak more hereafter. There are two other

copies of Cnut’s Laws Harl. MSS. 746. & 1704. Sec. 14 but

altho’

the same in substance with Domit. A. 8. yet as the ######arrangement

& language differ ### considerably – they are both to be transcribed.

#### Went to a trunkmaker’s & bought a portmanteau, as the first

step towards my journey – for I have not now a great deal of time to

spare. I bought also a Regent Virgil, pocket Editn. which will ####

^suit me, till I can meet with Heyne cheap. Called on my tailor in

Bond St. and desired him to send in my bill. Paid Kilpack

for binding my Homer. 2/6. per Vol. rather dear, – but well done. –

^Continued Sophocles & Kyng Horn in Ev~g.

Got Mr Whyte‘s ###cheque cashed at Drummonds }
