Sunday 16^th. Rain all the Mor^g. (damn St. Swithin!). I

employed myself in writing letters to my dear M., to her sister

Miss. H., and to my Mother. In the last I signified my intentions

for the future, not only of declining to draw on my Father for

any part of the Univ^y. expenses, but also of relinquishing

the annual 20£ I have hitherto received from him.

I feel much lighter & happier by doing this, & I trust I

shall be able by my own means to meet every thing without

having recourse to a single individual. Made out an acc’t

of my transcription of MSS. & Collations for Mr Petrie, which I

have annexed as usual. _^^{(See pp. 451-2)} It cleared up about 4 oC. and I

walked down to Fulham.
