20 September

Wednesday 20th. Rose at nine, & with extreme difficulty

dressed myself & put my things in my travelling bag.

Breakfasted – that is – ordered it – but touched nothing,

and at eleven oC. ####after discharging my bill – which

together with fees, &c. came to about £4.10s.0.d I proceeded

to the coach. I was rather late, & it had already

started, – but I overtook it in East St. It rained a

little, & so continued till the afternoon. I got on the

coach-box, & felt so ill, that I could scarcely keep

my seat. From the time we left Brighton till we

arrived at Portsmouth, at six oC. I never spoke or moved,

& got off the coach more dead than alive. I instantly

proceeded to my father’s house, where I found the

family at dinner, & my father unwell in bed##. Mr

White, the medical attendant, was instantly summoned,

& having put my feet in hot water, – taken a

strong emetic, – & some addenda – I passed a very

restless night,– with a violent fever on me.
