Compared with earlier months, the entries for September are short, coming in at just under 1800 words. This is partly a result of the illness that prevented Madden for writing for the last ten days of the month, but even before that many of the entries were brief, presumably as a result of the demands of his work at the British Museum. The Museum continues to dominate the word cloud of most frequently used words, but language about illness and travel also appears.

In September Madden took a break from London and the British Museum and travelled to Brighton to visit Mary Hayton and her family. Once there his illness prompted him to go on to his parents’ house in Portsmouth, cancelling plans for another visit to Holkham Hall and a trip to Maidstone. He remained in Portsmouth into October.
