Friday 21.st Went to the Musm. at the same hour, & met Mr
Baber at the door, who immediately took me aside, and
informing me of Hawkins‘s appointment, told me Mr Smedley
was “completely dished”, and advised me by all means
to apply to the Ab’p. I informed him of D.r Bliss‘s letter
to Vaux, & he told me to call on Vaux immediately, and
ascertain if he had spoken in my favor. Without any
delay therefore, I set off to Lambeth, & called at the Palace,
but found Mr V. was unfortunately absent at his
living near Worthing, & was not expected back for some time.
How extremely unlucky! Petrie at York, where I know
not where to find him, & Vaux & D’Oyly both absent!!

got back to the Musm. at ½ past eleven, & from that time till
4 oC. employed myself up stairs in the MS. room, transcribing
for Petrie. My extra hours of attendance will make up the time.
In the Evg. went to the Haymarket theatre, & saw Liston in
Quite Correct and Paul Pry. I did not laugh so much as
I expected; but these things are always magnified. It
rained as I came home, but I had not very far to walk.
