22 April

Saturday 22d. Breakfasted with the Vice. Three others

were also asked; Watts (employed in Bodln.), & the two

Bradfords, gentlemanly men. From 11 to 12, Livy. From

one till two, Logic. Dr Bliss introduced me to-day to

Dr. Coplestone, Provost of Oriel, who was very civil, and

desired me to call on him. I still go on with MS

Rawl. B. 333 (the Ramsey Charty.) for Mr Petrie ^(See p. 281).

I looked at 4 or 5 MSS. of Livy today in the Bodln.

all XV. Centy. ^They do not assist at all. In the Edd. PP.

lib. XXIV cap. 34 we read quae### ########

quidem naves subibant – for quaedam, which is

better I think. I am to go up to Mr Tiddiman on

Tuesday next with Herodotus. – Bought Mathiae’s Grammar

spent the remainder of the day in the Bodln. & contd.

the Ramsey Charty. Dr Bliss asked me to dine with him

tomorrow. Dr. Bandinel shewed me a letter from Mr Edw

Hawkins of the Brit. Musm. (recently appointed in the

place of Dr Noehden) requesting him to look at one

of the coins in the Bodln. collectn. as engraven by Wise.

This coin Dr Bandl. brought to me to compare with the

Plate, which is exceedingly badly executed,- & does not

do half justice to the coin, which is a gold piece of Edwd.

the Black prince, & in the finest preservation. Mr.

Hawkins wished to know, whether the letters D N S.

were distinct on the coin, because on ###a similar one in the

Brit. Musm. which had been struck twice, he did not think

sufficient dependence was to be placed. The legend

dns is perfectly legible on the Bodln. coin,*- which

reads: ######### DNS.ADJVTOR:ꝒTECIO:ME:IIPO:

SPAVIT:COR:MEVM.B. Dominus adjutor, protectio mea, in

ipso speravit cor meum.^Benedictus Wise omits the R. & on the obverse omits

the A. which forms a part of ANGL. – Studied Greek all the

Evening. Rain after dinner, & could not go out.

* The mistake is mine. It is not on the Reverse, but

on the Obv. that Hawkins wished to find

the word DN’S – where it is not, but

PN’S – Princeps.
