24 October

Tuesday 24th. Maj. Dyson called on me at 12 oC. & we had a

long talk. He told me, that his coins were part of a lot, nearly

200 in number, in silver, consisting of Gallienus, Otacilia

Severa, Philip ^3d, Gallus, Etruscilla, Volusian, ^Decius & Gordian 3d.

i.e. from A.D. 238 to A.D. 265. (Two also of Caracalla were

among them)

found ploughed up in a field in the township of Earnly

near Selsea, about 5 miles from Chichester. He shewed

me also some finely preserved Commonwealth half Crowns,

dug up in the Isle of Wight – with many others, amounting

to near 100 oz. of silver! He promised to send me more

of his Coins to look at, & Pinkerton, to read over again.

I began today to write a little of the Holkm. Cat. & sat up

till ten oC. Read Clarendon. Get stronger every day.

Maria received today an answer from Melissa

Palmer, relative to the MS. The Revd. Mr. Quin is gone

to France, and the MS. is at present in the hands of

the Revd. Mr Oliver of Exeter, who is transcribing part

of it. This is very provoking, particularly as I could

otherwise have obtained the loan of the MS. as long

as I pleased.* Mr Comerford sent me another Vol. to

read, containg. “The First part of the Life & reign of R.

Henrie the IIII. Written by J. H. [Hayward],” 4to. Lond. 1599.

&, “A short view of the Long Life and Raigne of Henry

the Third. Presented to R. James, 4to 1627.”

*In 1834, this MS. had been transferred to Stonyhurst.
