Thursday 27th. Chapel. & Logic. Mr. Watts told me this morng
a circumstance that greatly surprised ^and annoyed me. He told me
he had heard from Mr Mitchell, a member of our Hall,
that ## he (Mr. M.) had read in the Portsmo. Telegraph
of 16th inst. ###, my appointment to be Sublibn in the British
Musm!!! What a damnable piece of folly! I see
clearly how it has happened. Henry has told what
passed between Mr Baber & myself. to Mrs Jackson, & she
in writing home, has#### magnified it into ^a permanent### appointmt. I
can only suppose, that, on receivg such a letter, my
Father was fool enough to insert such a paragraph ^in the Paper.
It has vexed me to death, & I fear will be productive
of very great injury to me, ###should it fall under the
notice of Mr Baber or the Trustees, particularly of
Mr Tyndale. – I dined with D.r Bliss, &, by his advice
I shall take no further notice of it, than by writing
home – & expressing pretty plainly what I feel on the
subject. This I did, whilst at his house. Whilst with
him, I saw the Diploma & seal prepared, intended
to be presented by the University to Mr. Blanco White,
as an honor, for the service they consider he has done
the Church of England by his writings. In the Convocation
today, it was put to the vote, whether it ###should be done
or not, & it was carried by about 90 to 7.
Dr.
Copleston Bliss however, expected it would have been unanimous, &
had prepared the Diploma accordingly,– “conspirantibus omnium########
suffragiis”, which Dr. Bliss had copied,- ############## so by the division he had to scratch
this out, & insert a qualified term! It proved a wet #####evening
but I walked up to Haddington# with Dr. B.
