3 July

Monday 3d. Came up to town on a Coach, & after

dressing myself, went to the Musm. & saw Mr Baber,

who introduced me to Mr Horne and the two other

gentlemen employed on the Class Catalogue, viz. Mr####

Lee (Natl. Phily.) & Mr ^Tidd Pratt (Jurisprudence). The

class of Theology is taken by Mr Horne; that of

medecine, by Dr. Baddam, who has not yet made

his appearance; Poetry is to fall to the share

of Mr Cary; Mineralogy, to Mr. Köenig; Ornithology

## Natl. Histy to Mr. Children; & the Drama &

Literature generally to Mr Baber himself. The

three principal# & largest divisions are Theology,

Medecine, & History. It is computed ^that my division

will embrace near 50,000 titles! I had given to

me the printed “Outlines”, drawn up by Mr Horne

from Brunet & others, but in the Sub-divisions,

I am at liberty to use my own discretion. At

present, all the gentlemen employed sit in one

room, at a common table, with drawers, boxes, &c.

for the purposes of Classification, before them,- but

when this is further advanced, we shall have

separate Rooms, & sets of Books, &c. to refer to.

I find the plan very easy — at present.

At four oC. went to the Institution, where I met

Henry, & at ½ past 6. we went to ^the eating-house Rupert St. and

dined there. Just as we were coming out, who ###should I

see but ^my old acquaintance Patrick Strachan, who had come for the same purpose

as ourselves. We had a good laugh, & I promised

to call on him tomorrow (at 34 St. James St.) The

weather still continues insufferably warm, & affects

me considerably.
