Tuesday 30th. Wet day again. At Musm. ##from 10 till 4.
& began copying from that fine MS. 4.C.XI. the Roman
de Rou of Wace, for Mr Petrie, who had formerly transcribed
himself the latter part, & had now determined on #####having the
whole printed. I like the task very well, because it assists
my own reading. Mr Baber came to me, to ask if I had heard
anything more respecting the ######appointment at the Musm. It appears
the Archb~p. did not see him on Saturday, but Mr Planta.
There are no less than ten candidates at present for the
office, the most formidable of whom (& who is expected to
succeed) is Sir Wm. Ouseley, a brother of Sir Gore Ouseley‘s
who has probably (being a friend of the King’s) got the Royal
interest to interpose. Sir Wm. designs making this a step
to an appointment# over the Oriental MSS. which he is very,
well qualified to superintend. I fear I have but very
very little chance. Oh, my dear M. it is utterly impossible
to marry thee! I feel it in my very soul! Went to Tilbury‘s
the warehouseman in High St., Marylebone#, & desired him
to send for my three boxes of books on Thursday as I intend
on my next arrival in town to change my place of living, and
to take lodgings. Rain again all the Evening.
