WednesdayThursday 13th. I always attend Chapel every morn’g
at ½-past 8. as that frees me for the rest of the day.
There is service again at 4, but appearance once a day
is considered sufficient. Continued the Laws. Received
a letter from Mr Petrie. He is in some doubt about a MS.
(Digby No. 140.) which I have been able to elucidate. This
is an origl. work on the archb’ps of York from Paulinus
to Thurstin, where it ends. A continuation afterwards brought
it down to Abp. ^de la Souche in 1373. & both are printed in
Twysden, by whom, on the authority of Bale, the entire
work is ascribed to Thos. Stubbes. The MS. Digby ^however is itself
much earlier than Stubbes’s time. In the printed Preface,
the words magistri Will. la Souche #are substituted for Thurstini,
Tanner (art. Stubbes) had already suggested Stubbes
to have only continued the MS. ####. A second continuation
brought the work down to Wolsey, a copy of which is in
MS. Barlow No. 27. which I looked at, & which retains
the word Thurstini in the Preface. Tanner refers
to three other MSS. q. v. – Dined in Hall for ^the second
time, & got on a little better. ^Read Livy in Ev’g.
