Saturday 15th. Chapel. At Bodln. till 4oC. Finished at last the
Collation of the Laws, which I am very glad of. In the Ev’g went
to a Party #at Dr. Bliss‘s, & had the honor of being introduced to the
Vice Chancellor ^(Dr. Jenkins of Balliol) to Dr Kite of Chr. Ch., the tutor of Canning, ^and to
the Savilian Professor, Mr Rigaud. Dr Nichol also was there.
All these distinguished scholars treated me with very great
attention, & conversed with me a great deal, which is ######an unusual instance
of condescension to an Under-grad. There has been a proposal
made to me during the week by Mr Gaisford, the Regius
Prof. of Greek, & one of the Curators of the Bodln. to undertake
to catalogue the whole of their MSS. This, however, I have been
obliged to decline, as my engagements at the Musm. will only
allow me to keep two terms in the year. ##By Mr Gaisford’s
wish, I catalogued ^the Bodl. MS. No. 1. as a specimen of the
Plan I thought ## ought to be #######followed, & I was happy
to receive his entire approbation of it. At present, I believe,
I am to do the Canonici MSS. according as my time will
allow, ####, so soon as I have finished Mr Petrie‘s MSS. As
to Mr Whyte‘s, “Memoranda”, on looking them over, I find
they would occupy me a twelvemonth or more, & therefore I
must totally give up all thoughts of completing them.
