5 June

Monday 5th. Walked to town, & #####employed at the Musm. from 10

till 4. No news from the Abp. I had a conference with Mr

Baber respecting the Class Catalogue, in case I shdshould not succeed

in obtaining the appointmt of Sub-Libn. He told me that the

Salary of Sub. Libn. would be ^only 120£ per Annmcertain, for

two days attendance only in the week, & for every other

day in the week ####so much per Annm. more, which together ###

for sixfive days in the week would amount to 420345 £ per

Annm. There are 9060 days holidays or vacation in the year:

viz. 30 days in the autumn, & 10 days at Christmas, Easter,

& Whitsuntide! How glorious! In case I sh’d not be

appointed, he told me the #####salary which the gentlemen to

be engaged on the Class Catalogue were to ######receive, was 360 £

per Annm. for the six days in the week, & so in proportion,

## for a less number of days. The same number of holidays

will be allowed, as to the Sub-Libn. so that I shall be able

to keep ### my terms,* & still secure the 360 £ per Annm. I

only wish the Ab’p would decide either one ##way or the other!

After I left the Musm. I went with Henry to the Exhibition at

Somerset House. It was the first time I had ever been there,

& I confess I was & disappointed in my expectations of the paintings.

Most of them are mere daubs – but some, – particularly

some portraits of women were beautiful. I could only stay couple

of hours, but it would require much more time.

* This ###is mistake. The 360£ was only

allowed provided attendance was

given every day in the ###week throughout the year.
