20 May

Saturday 20th. At 8 oC. started for town. It poured

hard until we arrived at Henley, but then cleared

up, & the remainder of the day was beautiful.

Got to town by 3 oC. & drove to 12 Bedf. St. where I

found the house completely empty, & Fanny Graaf

very unwell. I shall look out for lodgings the

first thing. I then walked to my brothers lodgings,

& after wait.g an hour, he arrived. He shewed me

a letter from my Aunt Powell, in which she joins

with me in deprecatg the folly of inserting ^a notice of my ap=

pointment in the Newspaper. Henry tells me, he has

failed in obtain.g the situation at Maidstone, but through

a letter ###from my Uncle to Ld Palmerston has obtained

a Half-pay Ensigny,- which will give him for

life 50£. per ann. on the payment of 450£. i.e.

12 per Cent. for his money! This is very well & he

is very lucky to get it. I promised to come to Fulham

tomorrow, after calling at Lady De Cliffords, Westmorland

Green, Paddington, to inquire after Mr Coke.

After # tea, made use of my liberty, & not being

afraid of the Proctors, had some pleasan#t adventures.
